Manuel Eduardo de Gorostiza

Manuel María del Pilar Eduardo de Gorostiza y Cepeda ( born October 13, 1789 in Veracruz, (Mexico), † October 23, 1851 in Tacubaya, today Mexico City) was a Spanish- Mexican playwright and diplomat.

His father, Pedro Fernández de Gorostiza was Spanish governor of Veracruz. Gorostiza acquired first by his comedies Indulgencia para todos (Madrid 1813), Las costumbres de Antaño (Madrid 1819) and Don Dieguito (Madrid 1820), which were listed in 1815 in Madrid with great applause, a name.

As followers of Pronunciamiento of 1820 to the Constitution of Cadiz of 1812 he had the same escape many other of his compatriots after the French invasion of Spain and the pursued restoration from 1823 to England, where he zealously for the recognition of the independence of Mexico by the European courts worked.

Manuel Eduardo de Gorostiza was the first ambassador of Mexico in the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium. During his tenure in the Netherlands was signed on June 15, 1827 the governments of the Netherlands and Mexico, the first friendship and trade Seerechtsvertrag.

Soon after, he was Mexican Ambassador in London and later in Paris, where he graduated in the channel and alliance treaty with the French government. In this time, the writing of his most famous comedy falls: Contigo pan y cebolla ( 1833), 1833 ( Imprenta de Repullés ), which Eugène Scribe has taken the idea for his vaudeville Une chaumière et son coeur. Having returned to his native country, was G. State Council and Director of the theater to Mexico City. A selection of his dramatic writings appeared in 2 volumes (Brussels 1825) and the Teatro moderno espanol (Madrid 1836-38, 4 vols ). Goal of his mission in Washington was to find a peaceful agreement for the conflict to Texas.
