Manuel Franco da Costa de Oliveira Falcão

Manuel Franco da Costa Falcão de Oliveira ( born November 10, 1922 in Lisbon, Portugal, † February 21, 2012 in Beja ) was Roman Catholic bishop of Beja.

Life

Manuel Franco da Costa de Oliveira Falcão studied from 1939 to 1945 Mechanical Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico. He was co-founder of the Centro de Ação Social Universitária ( CASU ) and the University newspaper " Ala " the Juventude Católica Universitaria, Lisboa ( JUC ). After completing his studies in mechanical engineering in 1945, he entered the seminary Seminário dos Olivais. He received on 29 June 1951, the priesthood by Cardinal Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira. He was instrumental in the reorganization of the Patriarchate of Lisbon and the Chairman of the Preparatory Commission for the pastoral reorganization of patriarchy. In 1960 he was private secretary to Cardinal Gonçalves Cerejeira; he accompanied him in 1960 to the inauguration of Brasília.

Pope Paul VI. appointed him on December 6, 1966 Titular Bishop of Thelepte and auxiliary bishop in the Patriarchate of Lisbon. The Patriarch of Lisbon, Cardinal Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira, gave him on 22 January 1967, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were António de Castro Monteiro Xavier, Bishop of Lamego, and António de Campos, Auxiliary Bishop of Lisbon. He spent nine years secretary of the Episcopal Conference and its first delegate to the Council of European Bishops' Conferences ( CCEE).

On February 26, 1977 he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Beja and after retirement Manuel Dos Santos Rochas he succeeded him as Bishop of Beja. He was involved in the Portuguese Bishops' Conference, in particular the pastoral. In 1984, he founded the Department do Património Histórico e Artístico since Diocese de Beja ( DPHA ), a device for the protection of cultural property in the Diocese of Beja.

On 25 January 1999, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related.
