Manuel Joël

Manuel Joël (* October 19, 1826 in Birnbaum, today Międzychód, † November 3, 1890 in Breslau) was a Jewish scholar and rabbi.

Manuel Joel, son of a rabbi, graduated from the University of Berlin classical philology and philosophy and Jewish religion. Here he came under the influence of Leopold Zunz and Michael Sachs 1852 he earned his doctorate at the University of Halle Dr. phil. He arrived in 1854 as a teacher at the newly built Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau and in 1863 as the successor of Abraham Geiger rabbinical the local community. At rabbinical assemblies in Kassel ( 1868) and Leipzig (1869 ), he held a moderate reform movement in Judaism, unlike violinist radical views and entered in favor of preserving the Jewish character of synagogue worship and respect for the historical past.
