Manuel Mujica Láinez

Manuel Mujica Láinez ( born September 11, 1910 in Buenos Aires, † April 21, 1984, Cruz Chica, Córdoba) was an Argentine writer and journalist.

Life and work

Mujica Láinez attended schools in England and France and studied law at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. From 1932 he was editor of the newspaper La Nación. From 1955 to 1958 he was Head of the Cultural Department of the Argentine Foreign Ministry.

His work includes the collection of poems Canto a Buenos Aires and the story collection Misteriosa Buenos Aires. The resulting cycle of novels in the 1950s Los ídolos, La Casa, Los viajeros and Invitados en el paraíso is influenced by Marcel Proust.

His later work includes the trilogy Bomarzo, El Unicornio and El Laberinto. Bomarzo plays during the Italian Renaissance, El Unicornio in the French Middle Ages and El Laberinto in the Golden Age of Spain. Mujica Láinez tried to include the national character of the country in literature, which in turn have influenced the national character of Argentina with this trilogy.
