Manuel Ponce (composer)

Manuel María Ponce Cuéllar ( born December 8, 1882 in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, † April 24, 1948 in Mexico City) was a Mexican composer.

Life and achievements

Ponce grew up in Aguascalientes; the house where he lived with his family, now houses the Centro de Estudios Musicales Manuel M. Ponce. He was considered a child prodigy, already composed the age of eight, a piece entitled La Marcha del Sarampión and worked as an organist in his hometown. When he 1901 his studies at the Conservatorio National resumed, he already had a reputation as a pianist and composer.

In 1904 he went to Italy to study at the music school of Bologna, 1906-1908, he studied at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin. Upon his return to Mexico he taught until 1922 at the Conservatorio National, interrupted by a stay in Havana from 1915 until 1917. During the 1920s he went to Paris, where he became a pupil of Paul Dukas.

Ponce was a friend of the guitarist Andres Segovia, and so take guitar compositions large space in his drive. In addition, he has composed orchestral pieces, chamber music and piano music, and is considered one of the greatest song composers of Mexico; Achieved fame in Estrellita (1912).
