Manuel Rosenthal

Manuel Rosenthal ( born June 18, 1904 in Paris, † June 5, 2003 ) was a French composer and conductor.

Life

Rosenthal studied violin since 1918 when Jules Boucherit at the Conservatoire de Paris and counterpoint with Jean Huré. In 1925, he met Maurice Ravel know whose last pupil he was, and with the soon he formed a close friendship. In 1934 he became assistant conductor Désiré -Émile Inghelbrecht. In the 1930s, he orchestrated Ravel's Histoires naturelles and three of the Cinq mélodies populaires grecques. In 1934 he became conductor of the Orchestre National de la Radio Diffusion Française.

During the Second World War, he became a prisoner of war in 1940; after its liberation in 1944 he was principal conductor of the Orchestre National. From 1948 to 1951 he led the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, from 1964 to 1967, the Orchestre Symphonique de Liege. On international concert tours he performed the works of contemporary composers such as Stravinsky, Schoenberg, and Hindemith, Bartok, Messiaen, Satie, Debussy, Ravel and his teacher.

From 1962 to 1974 Rosenthal was professor of conducting at the Conservatoire de Paris. He composed operas, ballets and other orchestral works, chamber music, choral works and songs. In 1995 he published his memories of Ravel: Ravel: souvenirs de Manuel Rosenthal.
