Manuel Saturnino da Costa

Manuel Saturnino da Costa ( born 1942 ) was Prime Minister from 1994 to 1997 in Guinea- Bissau.

Political career

He joined the independence movement and later Partido Africano da unit Indepencia as e Cabo Verde Guinea ( PAIGC ) in the case that led a guerrilla war against Portugal until 1974. During the presidency of João Bernardo Vieira, who in 1980 came in a coup to power, he became Secretary General of the PAIGC.

In the first free parliamentary elections in July 1994, the PAIGC won and he became Prime Minister on 26 October 1994. An important event of his tenure was the accession to the West African Economic and Monetary Union and the replacement of old currency Guinea peso by the CFA franc on May 2, 1997. Upon his release by President Vieira on May 26, 1997, his predecessor, Carlos Correia beginning June 1997, his successor in office.
