The Maquinna Marine Provincial Park is a park in Clayoquot Sound on the west of the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is located northwest of Tofino and is from there or from Ahousaht or Hotsprings Village to reach only by boat or plane. It covers an area of 2667 ha, of which there are 1269 hectares in the country, plus 1398 hectares of protected marine area. He extends from Hot Springs Cove to Hesquiat Harbour.

In the park is a protected area category III ( Natural Monument ).

Several tribes of the Nuu- chah- nulth there own sacred sites, which are under special protection, but also how the Hesquiaht First Nation, a campsite. West of the park, the Hesquiat Peninsula Provincial Park, southeast of Flores is Iceland Marine Provincial Park on the eponymous island.

History

The park was established in 1955 as a sanctuary for marine fauna and flora. He is the first Marine Park of the province. The first 35 acres, the couple turned Clarke from Hot Springs Cove available. Its name, which was introduced in 1995, refers to Chief Maquinna. This name contributed several leaders of the Mowachaht that are important for the history of the province of considerable importance. In 1990, the park around the OpenIT Peninsula was extended, which includes approximately 39 ha. 1995 came the Hesquiat Harbour.

Flora and Fauna

Within the ecosystem of British Columbia, the park area of the Very Wet Maritime subzone of the Coastal Western Hyper Hemlock zone is assigned.
