Marcel Detienne

Marcel Detienne (* 1935) is a Belgian religious scholar, philologist, historical anthropologist and Kulturkomparatist. He is Emeritus Professor Basil Gildersleeve Lanneau of Classics at Johns Hopkins University and has established together with Jean -Pierre Vernant and Pierre Vidal- Naquet, the so-called École de Paris of historical anthropology.

Life

Detienne received his doctorate in 1960 at the École des Hautes Études en sciences to Docteur religieuses, in 1965 at the University of Liege Docteur en philosophie et lettres. In 1964 he founded with Vernant and Vidal- Naquet the Centre de Recherches sur les sociétés comparées anciennes in Paris. In 1975 Detienne became the directeur d'études en sciences at the École pratique religieuses des Hautes Études appointed, where he taught until 1998. Since 1992 until his retirement Detienne had also the Chair of Classical Philology at the Department of Classics at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore.

Work

Based on the structuralism, Claude Lévi -Strauss ' Detienne has initially developed a historical anthropology of classical and archaic Greece, but stresses more recently, the comparative perspective that takes into account both different cultures in comparison as also examines the cultural studies act of comparing.
