Life and career

Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear was born in 1868 as son of Torcuato de Alvear and grandson of Carlos María de Alvear. Like his father and grandfather, he took on a political career and was dated 12 October 1922 to October 11, 1928 Argentine president. During his tenure, Argentina experienced a strong economic recovery, which ended shortly thereafter in an economic crisis.

After the coup against Hipólito Yrigoyen on September 6, 1930 de Alvear took control of the party and was leader of the opposition. After a failed revolt in 1932 he was arrested and deported to Europe. 1935 de Alvear returned to Argentina and was again nominated as a presidential candidate of his party, losing to Roberto María Ortiz.

De Alvear saw himself as a member of the " aristocracy " of Buenos Aires. He was married to the opera singer Regina Pacini.
