Marcus Claudius Marcellus (consul 166 BC)

Marcus Claudius Marcellus (c. 208 BC; † 148 BC ) was an important military leader and politician of the Roman Republic, and three times consul.

Marcellus, born about 208 BC, was a scion of the plebeian branch of the family of the Claudian (gens Claudia ). 171 BC he was tribune of the people. In the years 169/168 BC he was praetor and propraetor in Spain, and then, 166 BC, the first consul. 155 BC, he held this office again, fought the defeated Celts and in the same year the Ligurians final. To thank him, a memorial was built of marble lunensischem by the inhabitants of the city of Luna. This could be either the first workpiece in Carrara marble, which has been used in architectural history.

In the period from 152/151 BC, Marcellus was consul for the third time and again as proconsul in Spain. His peace efforts have not been approved by the Senate.
