Marcusenius

Marcusenius moorii

Marcusenius is a genus of African freshwater fish from the family of mormyrids ( Mormyridae ). It occurs in all regions of sub-Saharan tropical Africa and the Nile.

Features

Marcusenius species are from 9.5 to 45 cm long and have a short to moderate elongate, laterally flattened body of typical Nilhechtgestalt. The muzzle is short and blunt, the mouth terminal. A fleshy thickening of the lower jaw serves as a sensory organ for the detection of food. The few teeth are conical or bicuspid. The rear body profile before the long caudal peduncle is triangular in shape and runs from the greatest body height at the base of the dorsal and anal fin to the end pointed to. The anal fin is longer than the dorsal fin, the caudal fin is forked.

The fish are inconspicuous, usually colored monochrome greyish or brownish. Like all mormyrids are Marcusenius species for electric communication and electrical orientation capable.
