Maredudd ap Cynan ab Owain Gwynedd

Maredudd ap Cynan († 1212 ) was a Lord of the Welsh principality of Gwynedd.

He was a younger son of Cynan from Owain, one of the sons of Owain Gwynedd. After the death of his father in 1173 he succeeded him as ruler of Eifionydd and Ardudwy. He allied himself with his young cousin Llywelyn ap Iorwerth and took over after their victories over their uncle Rhodri and Dafydd Owain from 1194 by his brother Gruffydd control of Merioneth. When his brother died in 1200, Maredudd also took control of the Lleyn Peninsula. However, Llywelyn accused him of treason and expelled him in 1201 again from Lleyn and 1202 from its other areas.

Together with his brother Gruffydd Maredudd founded in 1198 or 1199 the Cistercian Abbey Cymer Abbey.

His family later received back by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth Merioneth. They remained men of Merioneth, until they were expelled in 1256 by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd. Madog ap Llywelyn, the leader of the Welsh rebellion from 1294 to 1295, was a son of the last Lord of Merioneth.
