Marèges Dam

The Marèges Dam ( Barrage de Marèges French ) is a dam on the Dordogne at Liginiac in Correze (Auvergne ) and Saint- Pierre in the Cantal (Limousin ), France. It was built in 1935 to generate electricity. Due to the dam a reservoir is dammed up by 47 million m³. The dam is in the Massif Central, down the valley of the Barrage de Bort- les- Orgues and upstream from the " Barrage de l' Aigle ".

History

The arch dam was built in 1932-1935 by the railway company Compagnie des chemins de fer du Midi and has a height above the foundation of 89.50 meters. The engineer and specialist in arch dams André Coyne of the École polytechnique has planned the building. The inauguration took place in the presence of Henri Queuille and the directors of the Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans on 5 October 1935.

Hydroelectric power station

The dam was built primarily to generate energy. There are four Francis turbines for flow rates of ( ever? ) 60 m³ / s on the right side ( Liginiac ) and another for a flow rate of 190 m³ / s on the left side ( Saint- Pierre ). Is operated by the Société hydroélectrique du Midi ( SHEM ). The maximum capacity of the hydropower plant is 128 megawatts or 146 according to several sources. About 310 GWh are produced per year, with which some 66,000 households will be provided.

Others

On a stamp worth 1 Franc from 1943/ 44, the dam is shown.
