Margaret Erskine

Life

Margaret was the daughter of John Erskine, 5th Lord Erskine and his wife Margaret Campbell. In 1527 she married Sir Robert Douglas of Lochleven. Her husband fell at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh ( 1547). During their marriage, Margaret Erskine was the mistress of King James V ( 1512-1542 ). From the compound was an illegitimate son, James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray ( 1531-1570 ), out. Her eldest legitimate son William Douglas, 6th Earl of Morton ( 1540-1606 ), was Lord of the Manor of Loch Leven Castle during the local captivity of Mary Stuart 1567/68.
