Margilon ( Uzbek Margilon / Марғилон; Russian Маргилан / Margilan ) is an industrial city in the Uzbek province Fargona in the east of the country. Margilon lies on 487 meters above sea level, covers about 40 km ² and has 143,600 inhabitants ( 1999). The town is located 30 kilometers north of the city Fargona, a colonial foundation that contributed to the 20th century the name New Margelan (Russian Nowy Margelan ), and 70 km east of Qoqon. History

Economy

Margilon, today the center of Uzbekistan's silk industry, is also home to Uzbekistan's largest traditional silk factory named Yodgorlik that manufacture in which over 2,000 workers annually 250,000 m² of high quality silk. The neighboring Margilan Silk Factory produces 15,000 workers 22 million m² of silk per year.
