Marguerite Legot

Marguerite Victoire Zéphirine Anna De Riemaecker - Legot ( born March 9, 1913 in Oudenaarde, East Flanders, † May 7, 1977 in Brussels) was a Belgian politician of the Christelijke Volkspartij (CVP ) and the first female Minister of Belgium.

Life

After studying law and the acquisition of a doctorate in law she settled in Oudenaarde as a lawyer down.

Marguerite De Riemaecker - Legot 1946 was first elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies and was one of these as a representative of the CVP for Brussels until 1971. During this time she was 1961-1965 Secretary of the Chamber of Deputies.

In July 1965 she was appointed by Prime Minister Pierre Harmel as Minister for Families and Housing in the government and was the first woman to a ministerial office in Belgium. This ministerial position she held under Harmel successors Paul Vanden Boeynants and Gaston Eyskens until 1969.

After leaving the House of Representatives in 1971, she was Assistant and a member of the municipal council of Brussels and retained this office until her death.

On October 18, 1974, she was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State and was also the first woman who was awarded this honorary title. In addition, she was honored with the Grand Cross of the Order of Leopold and the Order of Merit of Cameroon.
