Maria of Cleves

Princess Mary of Cleves (* September 19, 1426; † July 23, 1486 in Picardy ) was by marriage Duchess of Orléans ( Duchess d' Orléans ).

Life

Mary was the youngest daughter of Duke Adolf II of Cleves (1373-1448) and his wife Mary of Burgundy (1393-1463), daughter of Duke John the Fearless and Margaret of Straubing- Holland.

On November 6, 1440 14 - year-old Maria of Cleves in Saint- Omer married the 49 -year-old Charles de Valois, duc d' Orléans, eldest son of Duke Louis of Orléans and Valentina Visconti, daughter of Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti of Milan. From the marriage, which by all accounts was happy, went after sixteen years of childlessness three children:

  • Marie (1457-1493) ∞ 1476 John of Foix ( 1450-1500 ), Count of Etampes
  • Louis XII. (1462-1515), Duke of Orléans, later King of France
  • Anna (1464-1491), Abbess of Fontevraud (1477-1491)
