Marian Lupu

Marian Lupu ( born June 20, 1966 in Balti, Moldavian SSR, Soviet Union ) is a Moldovan politician. From 2005 to 2009 he was, and since December 30, 2010 once again President of the Moldovan Parliament. Since 2009 he has been Chairman of the Democrat din Moldova Partidul.

Marian Lupu studied economics at the State University of Moldova in Chisinau. After graduation, he worked for the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization in Washington and Geneva.

After the 2001 parliamentary elections, which were won by the Moldovan Communists, Lupu was deputy economy minister of the new government under President Vladimir Voronin. In August 2003, he was Minister of Economic Affairs. After the 2005 parliamentary elections, he was elected President of Parliament. Lupu was a representative of the more Western- oriented wing of the Communists. In 2009, he was following the disputed elections in April as a possible successor to President Voronin. Shortly after the elections Lupu joined in June 2009, however, surprisingly from the Communist Party and joined the ranks of the opposition, which accused the Communists of election fraud. On 10 July 2009 he was elected Chairman of the Partidul Democrat. After the 2010 parliamentary elections, he was elected President of the Parliament again on 30 December 2010, and was in this capacity until 2012 kommissarisches head of state.
