Mariano Giaquinta

Mariano Giaquinta ( born March 14, 1947 in Caltagirone ) is an Italian mathematician who deals with analysis, especially with partial differential equations and calculus of variations.

Giaquinta studied at the University of Pisa with a diploma degree ( Laurea ) in 1969. As a post-doctoral researcher, he was at the University of Paris VI. From 1971 he was an assistant in Pisa, in 1976 associate professor in Modena, in 1978 in Ferrara and in 1979 at the University of Florence, where he was Professor of Mathematical Analysis in the same year. From 1996 he was Professor of Mathematical Analysis at the University of Pisa. He is since 1999 Professor at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa and director of the Centro Ennio de Giorgi was founded in 2001 in Pisa. He has been a visiting professor at Bonn, Heidelberg, Prague, Japan, Canberra, Taiwan, Beijing, at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University, the University of Paris VI, the ETH Zurich, the Mittag-Leffler Institute in Stockholm and at the Steklov Institute in Leningrad.

Giaquinta is internationally recognized as a leading expert in the calculus of variations. He worked among others with minimal surfaces with obstacles, Regularitätsproblemen in the calculus of variations and nonlinear elliptic systems and also with applications to ( non-linear ) theory of elasticity and liquid crystals. Most recently he worked on geometric measure theory, originally in the context of non-parametric variational problems, in which he introduced the concept of Cartesian current. It also deals with the history of mathematics in the context of cultural history.

He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1986 in Berkeley ( The problem of the regularity of minimizers ) and on the first European Congress of Mathematicians in Paris in 1992 ( Analytic and geometric aspects of variational problems for vector valued mappings ).

1993 to 2005 he was editor of Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations.

In 1979 he received the Bartolozzi Prize of the Italian Mathematical Union, the 1990 Humboldt Research Award and the 1998 prize Tartufari Luigi the Accademia dei Lincei.

Giaquinta is a member of the Leopoldina and a member of the Tuscan Academy of Sciences La Colombaria since 2002.
