Maribo Cathedral

The Cathedral of Maribo (Danish Maribo Domkirke ) is the cathedral church of the Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of Lolland -Falster.

The Maribo Domkirke was initially built as a monastery church of the Saviour Order, founded by the Swedish Birgitta Birgersdotter, on the shores of Southern Denmark Søndersø in Maribo. During the Reformation, the monastery was secularized. When the diocese was created in 1924 by splitting the Diocese of Roskilde, the former monastery church was rededicated to the bishopric. From the monastery ruins are otherwise only obtained, which are located west of the church.

The nave was built in 1410-20, but 1450-70 already expanded. The tower was built in 1500, had to be demolished in 1740 and rebuilt however. The exterior of the cathedral is marked by the red bricks and the characteristic of Danish churches stepped gables.

The three-nave interior is bright and cheerful through the chalk-white wall color, it is only in the chorus to find murals.

Not all of the inventory comes from the construction of the cathedral; Pulpit, altar and baptismal font are Baroque. A precious chalice from the 15th century engraved with scenes from the Passion of Christ is probably a gift from the then Queen Margaret I.
