Marie Calm

Marie Calm (pseudonym Marie Ruhland; born April 3, 1832 in Arolsen / Waldeck, † February 22, 1887 in Kassel) was a German writer, educator and women's rights activist.

Life

Calm Marie was the daughter of a merchant, who also worked as mayor of Arolsen in the Principality of Waldeck. Against the wishes of her parents, she was trained in a Geneva boarding school as a teacher and took a job as a teacher in 1853 in England. Five years later she worked as a teacher in Russia. After her father's death she took over in 1861 the management of the Higher School for Girls in Lennep, three years later, she again went to England. Finally, on the mother's request, she moved with this and her own sister to Kassel.

In 1865, Marie published Calm, who wrote under the pseudonym Marie Ruhland, her first work " sketches and short stories " and devoted himself in the following years strengthened her work as a writer. She published this poetry, novels and short stories that dealt mainly with the position of the teacher and the higher education of women. They drew on their own experiences, since she was responsible for the teachers and the higher education of women in the General German Women's Association. Marie Calm, who stood with the leaders of the bourgeois women's movement in contact, founded in 1869, together with Auguste Schmidt and other women of the Association of German teachers and educators. On their own initiative, and the woman Casseler Education Association ( FBV ), the Marie Calm board until her death in 1887, was born. The FBV -opened under her leadership, a specialist school for girls, where new professions should be opened by a better education. Later, the establishment of a training school was that teachers trained for the Housekeeping, craft and physical education.

Honor

Today roads in Kassel and Bad Arolsen Marie Calms names carry. In Baunatal a mother-child house was named after Marie Calm.
