Marie Elisabeth of Hesse-Darmstadt

Marie Elisabeth of Hesse- Darmstadt ( born March 11, 1656 in Darmstadt, † August 16 1715 in Römhild ) was the only by marriage Duchess of Saxe- Römhild.

Life

Marie Elisabeth was a daughter of the Landgrave Louis VI. of Hesse- Darmstadt (1630-1678) from his marriage to Maria Elisabeth (1634-1665), daughter of Duke Friedrich III. of Schleswig -Holstein - Gottorp.

She married on 1 March 1676 in Darmstadt, later to become the Duke Henry of Saxony- Römhild, which was still dominated together at the time of marriage with his six brothers over Saxe-Gotha. This divided the country in 1680 and Heinrich received Saxony- Römhild, where he had resided at Schloss Glücksburg since 1676. Henry loved his wife very much, he always called her " Marie Lies" and erected in her honor some luxury buildings, including the cave house, called " Mary -Elisabeth Lust". The marriage remained childless and Henry died 1710 legacy of enormous debt. To Saxony- Römhild sprung up among his remaining brothers an inheritance dispute, which could only be finally settled in 1765. Marie Elisabeth survived her husband by five years.
