Marie Heim-Vögtlin

Marie Heim- Vögtlin ( born October 7, 1845 in Bözen / Aargau, † November 7, 1916 in Zurich ) was the first Swiss doctor. She was the first Swiss woman who completed the study of medicine at the University of Zurich and founded the first Swiss Women's Hospital.

Life

Vögtlin Marie was the daughter of the village priest of Bözen. In 1868 she expressed a desire to study medicine and become a doctor, what a Switzerland -wide scandal provoked. So far, only a few foreigners had studied at the University of Zurich (Europe's first university, the women admitted to regular studies ), as the first woman ever the Russian Nadezhda Suslova.

Your engagement with her cousin Friedrich Erismann, also a medical student, was released from this after two years. In addition to her work as a gynecologist Marie Heim-Vögtlin actively promoted women's suffrage and was active in the temperance movement. She died on November 7, 1916 due to lung disease and was buried in the cemetery Sihlfeld Zurich.
