Marie José of Belgium

Marie José Charlotte Sophie Amélie Henriette Gabrielle (* August 4, 1906 in Ostend, Belgium, † January 27, 2001 in Geneva, Switzerland ) was a native of Princess of Belgium from the House of Saxe -Coburg and Gotha and the last Queen of Italy.

Life

She was the daughter of Belgian King Albert I and his wife Duchess Elisabeth in Bavaria. She was thus the aunt of the former Belgian King Albert II

Marie José married on January 8, 1930 in Rome, the Italian Crown Prince Umberto II and was at his side in 1946, the last queen of Italy. After 33 -day reign, the royal couple had to go to the Portuguese exile, and Italy became a republic. King Umberto II remained until his death in 1983 in Cascais, Queen Marie José left Portugal in 1957, she went to Switzerland after Merlinge in Geneva.

Marie José died on January 27, 2001 in their Swiss exile in Geneva, she was buried at the side of her husband, Umberto II in the Abbey of Hautecombe in Savoy on February 2. 2,000 guests were present at the burial of the last Queen of Italy.
