Marie-Magdeleine

Marie- Magdeleine is an oratorio ( Drame Sacré ) by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Louis Gallet of La vie de Jésus (1863 ) by Ernest Renan. The first study of the composition was already while Massenet's stay in Rome 1863-64. The premiere took place on April 11, 1873 at the Théâtre de l' Odéon in Paris with Pauline Viardot in the title role under the direction of Édouard Colonne. On February 9, 1903, the work in a staged version in Nice, three years later, also performed at the Opéra -Comique in Paris.

Action

The plot tells the last days of the life of Jesus of Nazareth from the perspective of his disciple Mary Magdalene. This is divided into three acts in four scenes:

Act I: The woman from Magdala at the fountain

Maria met other women at the well, which they deride as a courtesan and sinner. Judas Iscariot emerges from the crowd and makes her advances. Jesus appears and rebukes the amount of the sinner granted pardon and invites itself into her house.

Act II: Jesus with the woman from Magdala

In Mary's house, Jesus is expected as a guest. The servants and Martha prepare the reception. Judas ' is expressed towards her surprise that he wants to stop at the house of a sinner. His betrayal is already mapped out in his behavior. Mary and Martha received the guest with great reverence. Judas leads the rest of the apostles at Mary's house, they throw Jesus before, to bring them all with his behavior at risk. Jesus calms her down and asks them to pray.

Act III

Jesus already hanging on the cross and mocked by the crowd, the scribes, priests, Pharisees, and soldiers. Maria approaches against the resistance of the soldiers of the cross and stands weeping at Jesus' feet while he dies.

Picture 2: Jesus' grave and the Resurrection

The women go early in the morning to the grave of Jesus and find him there alive. Jesus entrusted Mary, all the disciples to proclaim his victory over death, and faith in the risen Christ. Jesus goes up to heaven, the whole of Christendom, and the angels sing his praises.
