Marie Sophie of Hesse-Darmstadt

Marie Sophie of Hesse- Darmstadt ( born May 7, 1661 Darmstadt, † August 22, 1712 in Gotha ) was by marriage the only Duchess of Saxe- Eisenberg.

Life

Sophie Marie was a daughter of the Landgrave Louis VI. of Hesse- Darmstadt (1630-1678) from his marriage to Maria Elisabeth (1634-1665), daughter of Duke Friedrich III. of Schleswig -Holstein - Gottorp.

They married on February 9, 1681 in Darmstadt, Duke Christian of Saxe- Eisenberg, who was at that time already a widower and father of a daughter. The year before, he had become by a division of the state with his brothers first Duke of Saxe- Eisenberg. The marriage remained childless and Christian died without an heir to. To Sachsen -Eisenberg was kindled among his remaining brothers and their descendants a legacy of years of strife.
