Marignac (Charente-Maritime)

Marignac is a West commune with 404 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Charente -Maritime in the Poitou -Charentes.

Location

Marignac lies at an altitude of about 60 meters above sea level. inst and at a distance of about 32 km ( driving distance ) south-east of Saintes in the cultural landscape of the Saintonge. The capital of the canton, Pons is located about ten kilometers north-west. Other cities with impressive Romanesque churches are just a few kilometers away: Biron, Bougneau, Échebrune, Chadenac, Avy, Pérignac and Others

Demographics

In the 19th century the place had at times over 600 residents, but by the phylloxera crisis and the loss of jobs due to the increasing mechanization of agriculture has declined, the population continuously thereafter.

Economy

The agriculture ( grain and wine) still plays the biggest role in the economic life of the community, whose floors are growing region of Cognac Fins Bois in the region. However, the tourism in the form of apartment rentals ( gîtes ) has become an important factor in the economic life of the community.

History

In the Middle Ages belonged to the church and place into a priory of around 100 km north-eastern Abbey Charroux.
