Marine Day

The Umi no Hi (Japanese海の日) and World Oceans Day, is a holiday in Japan on the third Monday in July.

Occasion

The holiday was introduced in 1996 in order to loosen the holiday -free season between May and September. On this day, the sea and the Navy are celebrated, both of which have a great significance for Japan. At Umi no hi many water sports competitions, shows and exhibitions are organized with respect to the sea and seafaring.

Background

The day was made ​​only in 1996 and was a national holiday until then under the name of umi no kinen -bi (海 の 記念 日, dt " Marine Memorial " ) is known. The Japanese Communications Minister Shozo Murata introduced this holiday in 1942 to the visit of the Meiji Tenno ( Mutsuhito ) and its 1876 run to the 1874 -built in England steamship Meiji Maru imperial round trip to remember through Tōhoku. The trip included several stops before the expedition again reaching Yokohama on July 20, 1876. By 2003, the Memorial was therefore always committed on July 20, then moved to the respective third Monday in July.
