Marinus Anton Donk

Marinus Anton Donk ( born August 14, 1908 in Situbondo / Java, † September 2, 1972 ) was a Dutch botanist and mycologist. His botanical and mycological author abbreviation is " Donk ".

Life

Donk was born on Java and graduated in the Netherlands, the high school and the study of biology at the University of Utrecht.

Even as a student he worked mycological and graduated in 1930 first part of its revision of the Dutch Heterobasidiomycetae and Homobasidiomycetae - Aphyllophorales from. In 1933 he received his doctorate with the second part of this work and then returned to Java, where he worked from 1934 to 1940 as a teacher and from 1941 as curator of the herbarium of the Botanical Gardens Buitenzorg. During the Second World War he was interned by the Japanese occupation, were also valuable records and manuscripts lost.

In 1947 he became head of the " Herbarium Bogoriense Buitenzorg " and returned in 1956 in the Netherlands, where he was transferred in Leiden, the management of the Mycological Department of Rijksherbarium.

Research

The main research topic of Donk was the taxonomy of fungi, especially the Aphyllophorales and Heterobasidiomycetes. He played a leading role in the development of a modern system for classifying the Aphyllophorales and had significant influence on the rules of nomenclature in fungi. Many genera, species and species combinations bear his name.
