Mario Bertok

Mario Bertok ( born September 2, 1929 in Zagreb, † 20 August 2008 at Lake Jarun in Zagreb) was a Croatian chess player and a sports journalist for the Croatian sports daily Sportske novosti.

Life

In 1957, the title of International Master, he was awarded. He also represented Yugoslavia at the Chess Olympiad in 1960 on the fourth board, finished in third place in Yugoslavia. Successfully he was also at European Team Championships: Both at the very first European Team Championships 1957 in Lower Austria Baden as well as at the European team championship in chess in 1961 in Oberhausen, he finished with the Yugoslav team to second place, where he also in 1957 an individual silver medal and 1961 individual bronze medal was awarded. Interzonal Stockholm 1962, he was 18 of 23 players. His international best result at the tournament could reach Rovinj -Zagreb, where he could reach the 9th place at the end Bertok 1970. Bertok was the famous Croatian actress Semka Sokolović - Bertok (1935-2008), which was formerly self- chess player, married. On 20 August 2008 Bertok was after he had been a few hours swimming in Lake Jarun in Zagreb, reported missing. The body was recovered from the bottom of the lake on the same day.
