Mário Covas

Mario Covas (* April 21, 1930 in Santos, SP, † March 6, 2001 in São Paulo, SP) was a Brazilian politician.

In 1952, he completed his degree in civil engineering at the University of São Paulo. Covas was elected in 1962 a member of the Chamber of Deputies for the PST. In 1966 he founded the Brazilian Democratic Movement ( MDB) and the political parties were abolished in Brazil by the military dictatorship. On January 19, 1969 his political rights were picked up by the dictatorship, and played until the year 1979. 1982 Covas for the Party of the Brazilian Democratic Movement ( PMDB ) was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, which emerged after the democratization of Brazil from the MDB.

On 10 May 1983 he was nominated for mayor of São Paulo and stayed until 31 December 1985 in office. Covas has become one of the all time renommiersten mayor of São Paulo.

Covas was elected in 1986 to the Senate of the State of São Paulo. He founded in 1988 the Party of Brazilian Social Democracy ( PSDB ) and was elected in 1994 to the Governor of the State of São Paulo. In 1998 he was re-elected.

Covas died in 2001, when he was still in office.
