Mario Melchiot

Mario Melchiot (* November 4, 1976 in Amsterdam) is a former Dutch football player. Melchiot plays in the position of central defender.

Career

The son of Surinamese immigrants came as a youth to the Dutch top club Ajax Amsterdam. He was brought there in the first team in 1996. In 1999 Melchiot to Chelsea. After a few years at Stamford Bridge, he moved early in the season 2004/ 05 to Birmingham City. From 2006 to 2007 he was at Rennes under contract before he moved to Wigan Athletic. In June 2010 it was announced that he signed a two-year contract for the 2010/11 season at Qatar club Umm Salal Sport Club -.

Melchiot is a member of the Dutch national team at the European Championships in 2008 and was the first time in a major tournament for the Oranje squad. He came to a use in the game against Romania.
