History

History and construction period ( 1850-1862 )

On 27 June 1850, the main Protestant church of Wiesbaden, the medieval Mauritius church was destroyed by fire. After a survey determined that the exterior walls still standing had no longer sufficient stability, the decision was made for a new building. On January 26, 1851, the architect Carl Boos was tasked with finding a suitable building site. Boos then submitted three proposals, namely the location of the old church at the Mauritius Mauritius space, the finally selected on the Schlossplatz, and a place in the vineyards on the slopes of the Taunus.

Since the new building should reflect the need for representation of Nassau residence and distinguished spa town, you rejected the old building site in the cramped old town. The five priests in the church council preferred the location in the vineyards on the hill, so that the new church was visible from a distance, but were overruled by the six lay people who preferred the central location on the Schlossplatz. The Nassauer Duke presented for the construction of the land available, but took no further to the construction costs.

Carl Boos, who had already distinguished by the 1838-1842 built by him in Wiesbaden ministry buildings, was awarded without competition in the same year a contract to build the new church market.

On 14 January 1852 he presented his plans for a plaster quarry stone, but changed his plans at February 25, 1852 to the effect that he is now arguing for an untypical for the region brick building. He was guided by Karl Friedrich Schinkel Friedrichswerderscher church in Berlin. The unusual neo-gothic design with its five towers reaped because of the material of the Gothic style, and the supposedly high towers criticism, of which Boos did not let impress. He increased the towers even more significantly to 300 feet for the main tower (about 98 m ), 175 feet to the side towers (about 57 m ) and 220 feet for the choir towers (about 73 m). The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 22, 1853, the inauguration on 13 November 1862.
