Markus Schopp ( born February 22, 1974 in Graz ) is a former Austrian football player at the position of a right attacking midfielder and current coach of SK Sturm Graz.

Career

Association

After a first experience in the student league with ESK Graz Schopp joined in 1987 in the youth team of SK Sturm Graz. In 1991, the team has been rejuvenated and Schopp got his chance in the first team. Until 1996 he worked for SK Sturm and won in this year's Cup victory the first title in the club's history. In addition, storm was second in the championship.

Thereafter, the midfielder moved to Hamburger SV, in which he stood from 1996 to 1998 under contract. Coach Felix Magath promoted his talent; supposedly he was already on the list of Berti Vogts until it found out that the potential German national team Austrians.

In the second season, he had bigger problems under new coach Frank Pagelsdorf and said goodbye to the winter despite offers from other Bundesliga back to Austria to his original club Sturm Graz. One reason for this was that there is a regular place was guaranteed to him and so did the participation in the 1998 World Cup was not in danger. After returning to SK Sturm Schopp celebrated his greatest successes as an active football player. 1998 and 1999 he was Austrian champion; Schopp was represented by storm three seasons in the Champions League.

According to international appearances in the Champions League Schopp was poached by Brescia Calcio and played from 2001 to 2005 in the Italian league. In 2005 he returned to the descent of Brescia Calcio to Austria for Red Bull Salzburg. After disagreements with coach Giovanni Trapattoni, he was loaned to the New York Red Bulls in the summer of 2006.

On 18 December 2007 he resigned due to chronic back problems from professional football.

National

After several missions in the U -18 and U -21 Schopp was 1995-2006 Players of the Austrian national team. He made his debut in the qualifiers for Euro 1996 against Latvia. Throughout his career he has 56 caps and scored six goals. His biggest success in the national team was participating in the Football World Cup 1998 in France.

Coach

Schopp was ordered on 21 January 2009 as the new coach of the U-10 team his master club SK Sturm Graz, after he had been working as a trainer from mid January to end of May 2008 at the Academy his last club, the New York Red Bulls. Since September 2010, Schopp, alongside his work in the storm - youth also assistant coach of the Austrian U-21 national team. With the 2011/12 season Schopp took over as head coach, AKA 18 Sturm Graz and finished his work as an assistant coach at the U-21 national team. Since 13 April 2012, he coached the amateurs of SK Sturm Graz. On April 22, 2013 he was promoted to interim head coach.
