History

In the period before European colonization of the Ngarrindjeri, an aboriginal tribe took advantage of the valley of the Marne River as a route from the Murray River in the hills to drive there with Peramangk, another tribe of indigenous people in the Barossa Valley, Commerce. The bark of Eucalyptus trees in this valley was also thicker than the trees in the Murray valley, so that they could be better used to build canoes. The Aborigines called the river originally Taingappa (English: Footpath, trade route ).
