Maron (mythology)

Maron (Greek Μάρων ) was in Greek mythology a Thracian priest of Apollo, and King of Cicones in Ismarus, probably the ancient Maroneia. He gave Odysseus in gratitude for the protection of which the heavy wine, with this later Cyclops Polyphemus stunned.

In Homer he is the son of Euanthes. In the Cyclops of Euripides, he appears as the son of Dionysus and the Dionysiaca of Nonnus he is the son of Silenus, thus grandson of Dionysus and his charioteer, in the catalog of Hesiod he is grandson of Oenopion and thus great-grandson of Dionysus, ie, it is in the later authors strongly associated with the cult of Dionysus.

Its name probably derives from Maroneia ago, which was famous for its high-quality wine and where Maron cult is numismatic occupied. According to Diodorus Maron followed the Osiris as a wine growing Lore and was the founder and hero of Maroneia.
