Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 70 to 95 millimeters. The basic color of the tops of all wings is orange and crossed by three thin straight black lines, the sharp bend right at the front edge of the front wing to the inside and which continue on the hind wings. On the fore wings there is also a short black line in the Diskalregion. The apex terminates in a far outwardly tip. The hem of the hind wings is brownish. Specific type is a long straight tail, as it is also similar in many species of swallowtail butterfly ( Papilionidae ) available. At the apex there is another, much shorter tail. The lower wing shows a gray-brown to reddish-brown color with a over the front and rear wings extending black line.

Egg

The eggs are pale yellow.

Caterpillar

Full-grown caterpillars are extraordinarily colorful and striking. You have an alternate pink, blue, green, black and white color. The head is reddish and bears two thin black horns, the pages are blue green and red, large parts of the back are white, sometimes yellowish. The abdominal legs are white and have a black dot and the overlying slashes. On the second, fourth and sixth segment and at the end of the abdomen are long, straight thorns.

Doll

The doll has either a light green or a gray-white color and is fitted with dark spots. In the abdomen a long and some short peaks are visible. Two short spines located on the elytra and two other, slightly curved at the top.

Occurrence and habitat

Marpesia Petreus comes in Brazil, Peru, Suriname, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Lesser Antilles, as well as north to Florida before. Immigrations were reported from Texas ( regularly) and Nebraska ( rare). The species inhabited mainly subtropical forest areas.

Way of life

The moths fly in several generations throughout the year. You suck at flowers or moist Erdstellen. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of the mulberry family ( Moraceae ) in Florida from Real fig ( Ficus carica ), Ficus aurea Ficus brevifolia and as well as in Central and South America from Ficus citrifolia Ficus and padifolia.
