Marquess of Exeter

Marquess of Exeter is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He has been awarded twice, once in the Peerage of England and the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It is the oldest and thus senior Marquessat in this nobility. He is supported by a branch of the Cecil family.

Ancestral home of the family is Burghley House in Stamford, Lincolnshire.

Award

The first ceremony took place in 1525 in the Peerage of England to Henry Courtenay, a close friend and confidant of King [ Henry VIII (England) | [ Henry VIII ] ] The dignity but then fell in 1538, when the first Marquess of Exeter in the course conspiracy executed for high treason and he was stripped of his title.

The title was for Henry Cecil, 10th Earl of Exeter, created for the second time in 1801.

Subordinate title

The Marquess of the first ceremony had already inherited from his father the structures created for this title of Earl of Devon, who also belongs to the Peerage of England.

The Marquess of Exeter additionally carries the title Earl of Exeter ( created 1605 ) and Baron Burghley, in the County of Northampton ( created 1557), both in the Peerage of England.

The eldest son and heir apparent of the respective Marquess takes the courtesy title of Baron Burghley.
