Mars effect

Michel Gauquelin (* November 13, 1928, † 20 May 1991, France ) was a psychologist and statistician. Along with his first wife Françoise Schneider- Gauquelin he tried to prove astrology statistically.

After studying psychology and statistics at the Sorbonne, he devoted himself to an effort to demonstrate the validity of principles of astrology. He did not, however, even as astrologers and was certain practices of astrology quite skeptical. As a first result of Gauquelin's work appeared in 1951, the influence of the stars, in which he analyzed the work of his predecessors in statistical astrology, Paul and Karl Ernst Krafft Choisnard. Gauquelin concluded from the fact that in occupationally successful personalities the position of certain planets in the horoscope had a distribution that was not accidental. Gauqelin claimed to have found in his studies statistically significant clusters of positions of Mars in athletes, similar clusters with Jupiter for actors and with Saturn for scientists. However, his analysis of more than 500,000 birth data also confirmed that for most elements detected in horoscopes no statistical evidence of the effect attributed to them could be identified. Said by Gauquelin "Mars effect" accumulation of certain constellations in relation to outstanding personalities could only be proven for 0.006 % of the data and selected constellations. Later it was found that the effect is likely to be explained by false information from parents to the birth dates of their children.

Towards the end of his life, he suggested that the astrologer should set aside the majority of their traditions and create a reformed system of astrology, which is based on the foundation, demonstrably represent statistically accurate and verifiable results. He called this neo- astrology, which is also the title of his last book, in which he summarized his previous statistical studies. It is often quoted by astrologers as an argument in favor of astrology.

His wife Françoise Schneider- Gauquelin (1929-2007) and he broke up in 1982. This year she began her journal Psychological Astro- problem, which was published until 1995.
