Mars Surveyor 2001

Mars Surveyor is the name of a Mars research program of NASA. The Mars Surveyor 1998 Orbiter, later Mars Climate Orbiter called, was shot at a Mars orbit to low altitude and was lost. The cause were conversion errors from SI units to U.S. units. The Mars Surveyor 1998 Lander, also called Mars Polar Lander, also reached Mars, but from her no more signals could be received after entry into the Martian atmosphere.

The Mars Surveyor 2001 program included two follow-up probes. The Mars Surveyor 2001 Lander with Rover was partially built, but not started. The Mars Surveyor 2001 Orbiter, now referred to as the 2001 Mars Odyssey, launched on 7 April 2001. Since February 19, 2002, he successfully mapped the surface of Mars, serving the Martian rovers Spirit and Opportunity as a relay station for the radio link to Earth.

Later components of the partially completed built lander Mars Surveyor 2001 Lander were used for use in the Phoenix spacecraft, which start on August 4, 2007, and their mission November 10, 2008 ended.
