Mart Saar

Mart Saar ( born August 28, 1882, the court Hüpassaare, today village Vihi, Suure -Jaani, Viljandi County, Estonia, † October 28, 1963 in Tallinn) was an Estonian composer.

Training

Mart Saar was born into the family of a forester. He attended primary school in the village Kaansoo, the parish school in Suure -Jaani and high school Põltsamaa. At the age of eight, he was given the first organ. The music teacher in Suure -Jaani, Joosep Kapp, the father of the composer Artur Kapp, discovered and encouraged the boy's talent.

Beginning in 1901, studied Mart Saar organ at the Saint Louis Homilius Petersburg Conservatory. In 1908 he completed his studies. By 1911, he completed a post - graduate program in composition with Nikolai Rimsky- Korsakov and Anatoly Ljadow.

Composer

As of 1911, Mart Saar settled as a music teacher in Tartu, before moving in 1921 as a freelance composer and organist to Tallinn. He was also editor of the music magazine Muusikaleht.

From 1932 to 1943 he lived and Mart Saar worked in his parents' home in Hüpassaare. From 1943 to 1956 he was professor of composition at the Tallinn Conservatory. Among his most famous students include esters Mägi, Harri Otsa and Jaan Rääts.

Work

Mart Saar was one of the most famous and respected composers of his time. His early years are strongly influenced by the music of the 19th century. At a later period he combined more and more contemporary music with influences from traditional Estonian folk music. His choral works with Estonian poetry (of which he wrote some texts themselves) are still among the most famous songs in Estonia.

Aftermath

Mart Saar is located today in the cemetery of Suure -Jaani buried. 1972, a museum was set about his work in his parents' home in Hüpassaare. 1982 created the sculptor Aime Kuulbusch ( b. 1942 ) a monument to Mart Saar in Tallinn.
