Mart Smeets

January Martinus ( Mart ) Smeets ( born January 11, 1947 in Arnhem) is a Dutch radio and TV presenter, (sports ) journalist and sports commentator for public television in the Netherlands NOS.

Biography

Mart Smeets moved with his parents at the age of six years from his birth city of Arnhem to Amsterdam, where he made the HBS degree. In his youth, he tried his hand at several sports, and got stuck in basketball. For ten years he was (1.94 m tall ) professional basketball player at Levi's Flamingo's Haarlem. He played six matches for the Dutch national basketball team, but in 1972, when it came to the Olympic qualification, he was not nominated for this.

After an accident ended a Smeets Sportlerlaubahn and entered the service of the Haarlem Dagblads to write later as a freelancer for De Tijd, the Haagse Post and de Volkskrant. From De Tijd, he was sent to Munich to report from there over the Olympic bombing at the Olympics on 5 September 1972. So he came in contact with Bob Spaak, a charge of NOS, where he since 1973 as a reporter, and later hosted the show Studio Sport Worked. As a reporter he specialized in speed skating and bicycle racing, and reported from various competitions. He came zurTour de France, both as a reporter / commentator and as host of the late night show sent De Avondetappe.

Besides his work for the NOS Smeets writes weekly columns for many years, among other things for Sport Week, Trouw, the Haarlem Dagblad and VARAgids. He also presented a long time the nightly music program For the record on Radio 2

On 3 December 2008, the jury of the Dutch Beeld en Geluid Awards, for his work on the Gold Award Mart Smeets. He was also awarded a place at the glass wall of fame in the Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid in Hilversum. The jury, headed by Peter Romans, Smeets called an icon of the Dutch sports journalism.

In 2012 he moved his book " De Lance Factor" ( 2011) back from the list of nominees of Nazi Publieksprijs after the report of the USADA was known of the Americans Lance Armstrong convicted of doping. By his own admission he would not take any prize awarded in reception: "I wrote this book three years ago from my reality out The truth is my reality now caught up. . ." In response, appeared in May 2013 Gepakt about the sport of cycling and its view of itself as a sports journalist after transfer Armstrong. After the NOS announced him to the 2012 Olympic Games no longer use fixed, Smeets went as a basketball commentator for Dutch pay TV channel Sport 1.
