Martin Christoffel

Martin Christoffel ( born September 2, 1922 in Basel; † 3 April 2001 Rombach ) was a Swiss chess player.

Tournament chess

Christoffel was a member of the Chess Club Baden. He was four times Swiss champion, namely, 1943 in St. Gallen, 1945 in Lugano, 1948 in Bern ( after Tie with Fritz Gygli ) and in 1952 in Zurich. In 1944, he won the Coupe Suisse.

A major international success was in London in 1946, the second place behind Euwe. Also in the international tournament Zurich in 1952, he finished together with Euwe behind Lundin 2nd place in 1952 he became the first Swiss International Master of FIDE.

After his retirement, he was active again. He won four times the Swiss Seniors Championship from 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1994.

Correspondence Chess

Also in correspondence chess Christoffel was active. He participated in the 9th, 10th and 11th Olympiad. In 1989 he was awarded the title of International Correspondence Chess Champion, 2000 the title Senior International Master ( SIM). He was also instrumental in the founding of the Swiss Correspondence Chess Association ( SFSV ).

The organizer

From 1983 headed the Christoffel Swiss television tournaments. From 1987 to 1991 he was President of the Central Swiss Chess Federation. At times he was a member of the Board of the Swiss Correspondence Chess Association ( SFSV ).
