Martin G. Schuneman

Martin Gerretsen Schuneman ( born February 10, 1764 in Catskill, New York, † February 21, 1827 ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1805 and 1807, he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Martin Gerretsen Schuneman grew up during the British colonial era. He was taught by his father. In 1792 he was justice of the peace in Albany County. He went commercial transactions after and owned a tavern ( inn ) in Madison. In the years 1797, 1799 and 1802, he was Town Supervisor in Catskill, first in Albany County, and later in Greene County. He was sitting 1798-1800 for Ulster County and in 1803 for Greene County in the New York State Assembly. In 1801 he took part in the Constitutional Convention of New York as a delegate from Greene County. As opponents of a strong central government, he joined at that time, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson Democratic- Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1804 he was in the seventh election district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Josiah Hasbrouck on March 4, 1805. He retired after the March 3, 1807 out of the Congress. Then he went to his former shops. He died on February 21, 1827 in Catskill, and was then at the Old Cemetery in Madison (now Leeds ) buried.
