Martin Hoek

Martin Hoek (also Martinus ) ( born December 13, 1834 in The Hague, † September 3, 1873 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch astronomer and experimental physicists.

He studied medicine from 1852 first and the last two years of mathematics and physics at the University of Leiden at Frederik Kaiser. In 1857 he received his doctorate with the work of De comet van de jaren 1556 1264 s 975, s hare vermeende identiteit. Between 1856 and 1860 the Donati'sche comet was again expected. Karl Ludwig von Littrow in 1856 rediscovered both the records of Joachim Heller, as well as the originals of Paul Fabricius at Vienna State Archives. Hoek doubted on the basis of path data, the identity of the comets of 1264 and 1556.

In 1859 he was associate professor of astronomy at the University of Utrecht and Director of the Royal Observatory Sonnenborgh.

With Anthonid Cornelis Oudemans he wrote Recherches de la quantite d' ether contenue dans les liquides (1864 ) and Sur les contractions dans les mélanges de liquides.

In 1868 he conducted an improved version of the Fizeau experiment.
