Martin-Joseph Mengal

Martin -Joseph Mengal ( born January 27, 1784 in Ghent, † July 4, 1851 ) was a Belgian horn player, composer and conductor.

Life

Martin -Joseph Mengal, who came from a family of musicians, received as a child horn and violin lessons. At the age of 12 he began composing in 1797 he was principal horn of the Ghent Opera. From 1804 Mengal began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire with Frédéric Nicolas Duvernoy ( 1765-1838 ) (French horn) and Charles -Simon Catel ( harmony and composition ), but back in December of the same year he joined the band of the Imperial Garden. In his military service, he participated in the campaigns of Napoleon to Italy, Austria and Prussia. Between the campaigns he took over again on his studies.

One of his teachers was the relevant acting in Paris Anton Reicha. Mengal was 1812 horn player at the Opéra -Comique. In favor Tailleyrands standing, he was able to perform some of his operas there. In 1825, he returned to his hometown of Ghent, to later take over the orchestra first line management of the local theater. In 1830 he became conductor of the opera orchestra in Antwerp, shortly thereafter, he held the same position at The Hague. In 1835 he was the founding director of the Ghent Conservatory. His most important pupil was François- Auguste Gevaert ( 1828-1908 ). From his brother Jean -Baptiste Mengal (1792-1878) some compositions also came down.
