Martin Litchfield West

Martin Litchfield West OM ( born September 23, 1937 in London ) is a British classical scholar. He is one of the most prominent representatives of the subject, particularly the Gräzistik.

Life and work

West worked on the study of classical philology at the University of Oxford. In 1960 he became a junior Woodhouse Research Fellow at St John 's College, 1963 Fellow and Praelector in Classics at University College. In 1974 he was appointed to the chair of Gräzistik at the University of London. 1994, he became a Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford University, where he became Professor Emeritus in 2004.

His research dealt with the music of ancient Greece, the relations between Greece and the Middle East, between shamanism and the Greek religion and Orphism. To this end, he pulled up next to the Latin and Greek texts of the ancient languages ​​of the Middle East. Following this work, West also dealt with the Indo-European culture and poetry. From 1998 to 2000, his critical edition of the text of the Iliad appeared in two volumes in the Bibliotheca Teubneriana. West is a full member of the British Academy, a member of the Academia Europaea, and Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen. In 2000 he was awarded the Balzan Prize for his achievements in archeology. At the ceremony for the Kenyon Medal for Classical Studies of the British Academy (2002 ) West was called " the most brilliant and productive Hellenist of his generation".
