Martin Peninsula

Geographical location

The Martin Peninsula ( Martin Peninsula ) is an approximately 90 km long and 35 km wide, Antarctic Peninsula. It lies between the Getz Ice Shelf in the west and the Dotson Ice Shelf in the east, two smaller Antarctic ice shelves. In the north it extends into the temporary ice-free waters of the Amundsen Sea. The northern third of the almost completely glaciated peninsula from the fjord-like bay Philbin ( Philpin Inlet ) can be subdivided into two major parts - the Slichter Foreland and the Murray Foreland to the northernmost point of the peninsula, the Cape Herlacher. In the south close to the Martin- peninsula at the Kohler Range.

The Martin Peninsula was first mapped in 1947 as part of Operation High Jump. Was named the peninsula after Lawrence Martin, an American officer.
