Martino Longhi the Elder

Martino Longhi the Elder, called il Vecchio, (* 1530 in Viggiù, † November 6, 1591 in Rome ) was an Italian architect.

Life

Longhi went to Rome, where he in 1575 papal architect by Pope Gregory XIII. been. He was influenced by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola. Longhi completed a number of buildings on the Capitoline Hill in Rome and created the Church of San Girolamo degli Schiavoni ( 1588-90 ) and Chiesa Nuova. Its courtyard of the Palazzo Borghese is a good example of Mannerism in architecture. Also Longhi's son Honorius (1569-1619) was a famous Roman architect, as well as his grandson, Martino the Younger ( 1602-60 ). The two created the Roman church of Santi Ambrogio e Carlo ( 1612-42 ) in the age of the Baroque.
